Youth Sports
The City of Newark offers a wide variety of youth sports programs. Simply click on a class of interest (heading) to learn more and be sure to sign up early as these classes can fill up quickly:
Jr. Warriors Youth Basketball
For K-2nd Grade Boys and Girls “Everyone Plays”. Newark Recreation and Community Services Department in partnership with the Golden State Warriors and the Jr. NBA and Jr. WNBA, offers recreation level instruction and league play on Saturdays at the Silliman Activity Center Gym.
Program includes Junior Warriors Reversible Jersey, Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA school folder, family calendar, player and parent guide, and membership card.

Private Basketball Lessons
Become a better basketball player! Need help with your ball handling, post play, defensive foot work, shooting or conditioning? Our private instructor can help. Robert Vaughn is an accomplished player, coach and instructor and he is available now for private lessons. Make the most of your preseason and start training today! Lessons are being offered Monday or Tuesday between the hours of 4:30-6:30. The fee is $25/hr for one, $10 for each additional. Call Bryan Cobb at 578-4407 to register.
Little Shooters Mini Basketball Camps
For K – 2nd Grade Boys & Girls
Our 4 - day mini-camps are a great introduction to the game of basketball. First-time players will learn the fundamentals of ball handling, passing, defense and shooting in a “fun”petitive not competitive environment. Players with experience can sharpen their skills for the upcoming season.

Youth Basketball Instructional Classes
For 3rd-8th graders.
Want to sharpen your skills for the upcoming Jr. Warriors basketball league? This class is for you! Participants will go through a variety of drills and competitions designed to help sharpen their skills in shooting, ball handling, defense, passing and much more.

Self Defense Karate
Let the experts at Kid Safe teach your child basic self-defense techniques in a fun and supportive “safety awareness” program. Your child will develop self-confidence, discipline, and strength through the practice of basic Karate. Belt promotions will be held at the conclusion of each session. Uniforms and advancement belts may be purchased from the instructor.

Tae-Kwon-Do Tots
Tae-Kwon-Do Tots class is designed to develop coordination, balance, and attention span in addition to learning basic karate moves in a fun and structured environment. This course prepares toddlers for the Kid Safe USA program which begins at age 5. Parent participation required.

Kenpo Karate
Kenpo Karate is an eclectic Martial Arts system that is particularly popular in the United States and is unique in that it teaches the use of “grab arts” or “self defense techniques”. It places equal emphasis on the use of hands and feet. Kempo also practices Kata or forms like other martial arts. The class is taught in a safe, fun fashion and no falls are necessary. Loose clothing (e.g. sweatpants and T shirts) are recommended for the class.

Tennis
Enjoy top-flight instruction from the staff of Stanford University Coach, John Whitlinger and USPTA Professional, Tom Sarsfield at Birch Grove Park. Classes of 3 will be converted into six (6) one-hour lessons. Classes of 2 will be converted into four (4) one-hour lessons. Terrific Tiny (TTT) classes of 3-6 students will have six (6) 45-minute classes. Bring your own racket and wear tennis shoes. All classes will be held at Birch Grove Tennis Courts #1 and 2.

Ice Skating
Learn to skate at Sharks Ice at Fremont. The fee includes a thirty minute lesson, free skate rental, and free public session the day of the class. Plan to arrive early enough to allow time to put on skates before class.

Youth: Covers the proper way to fall down, get up, two foot glide, one foot glide, forward swizzles, forward stroking, backward swizzles, stopping and an introductory spin.
Tots: This class develops confidence on the ice while teaching the proper way to fall down, get up, basic forward skating, balance and introduces glides and stops.

Mommy/Daddy & Me
For ages 2.5 - 3
Introduce yourself and your toddler to the “World’s Most Popular Game”! As you and your child participate in our fun age appropriate activities, your child will be developing their large motor skills and socialization skills. A variety of activities designed around the game of soccer will be played each week. The fun happens on the field, and in Mommy/Daddy & Me Soccer, you won’t have to watch from the sidelines.

Kidz Love Soccer
For ages 3.5 – 12 yrs
This Kidz Love Soccer, soccer ‘school’, is a non-competitive, recreational environment for children to play and learn the world’s most popular sport. Sessions include age specific guided discovery, warm-ups, skill demonstrations, thematic skill building games, and recreational soccer games.
