Recreation and Community Services Director
We create community through our people, parks and programs!
At the award-winning George M. Silliman Activity and Family Aquatic Center, the Newark Community/State Licensed Child Care Center and the Clark W. Redeker Senior Center, we offer a diverse and fun mixture of activities and programs for all ages.
Free, family-friendly special events are held throughout the year including holiday celebrations, a summer concert series, Mariachi Festival and much more! We also offer opportunities to participate in youth and adult sports leagues and camps, specialized enrichment camps, learn-to-swim lessons, dance, preschool classes, teen programs and special events, senior activities, classes and trips and much, much more!! To support our programs and services, we also offer a variety of year-around employment opportunities.
David Zehnder has served as the Recreation and Community Services Director since 2006. He began his career with the City of Newark in 1989 and previously held a variety of increasingly responsible management positions within the Recreation and Community Services Department. He holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Recreation Administration from California State University Hayward. When not creating community in Newark, David enjoys spending time with his family and participating in outdoor sports activities.
What makes Newark a great community is the feeling of belonging - knowing there are opportunities to interact, explore and enrich life all in your own neighborhood.
The mission of the Newark Recreation and Community Services Department is to enrich the lives of all community members by providing recreational and educational programs, social opportunities and quality facilities and services.
