Volunteers in Policing (VIP)

The Newark Police Department Volunteers in Policing (VIP) Program consists of adult citizen volunteers who live or work in the City of Newark. These trained volunteers are utilized to enhance the services provided to the community by the Newark Police Department.
The VIP Program:
- Builds better community relations by giving the public the opportunity to become more familiar with the services provided by the Police Department, as well as a better understanding of the inner workings of the department;
- Forms a mutual partnership as volunteers supplement existing department services, thereby freeing employed staff to perform other duties; and
- Places volunteers in assignments which best utilize their existing skills, talents, and interests while offering a rewarding challenge, and in some cases, new skills.

Participant Requirements:
- Minimum age—18 years old
- Live or work in the City of Newark
- No prior felony convictions
- No misdemeanor arrests within one year of application
Assignments vary, but could include answering phones, assisting citizens at the front counter, filing, processing paperwork, compiling data for reporting purposes, just to name a few. If you have time to spare and would like to offer your services, we would be glad to have you aboard! Please contact Commander Bob Douglas at (510) 578-4220 or via email at {encode="robert.douglas@newark.org"} for more information.
