Zoning Ordinance Update

Zoning Ordinance Update

On November 7th, the City Council will hold a work session to discuss the Draft Zoning Code.  The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers.  A copy of the Draft Zoning Code is available here.

The meeting is open to the public.

The City is embarking on a comprehensive "overhaul" of the Zoning Ordinance which would result in a modern, intuitive, effective document.  The Ordinance includes regulations for setbacks, height, landscaping, signage, parking, hazardous materials storage, form based codes, Transition Overlay Districts, and historical resources.  Newark's existing Zoning Ordinace was originally adopted in 1965 and has been amended numerous times over the years.  Until now it has not received a comprehensive review and update.

Next Steps

If the City Council deems it appropriate to move forward on the Draft Zoning Code, it's expected that City Council will hold public hearings on the Draft Zoning Code in the beginning of 2018.
