Zoning Ordinance Update

Zoning Ordinance Update

On December 12, 2017, the Planning Commission will consider the proposed Zoning Ordinance,  If approved by the Planning Commission, the Zoning Ordinance will be moved to the City Council for consideration.  The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers.  A copy of the Draft Zoning Code is available here.

The meeting is open to the public.

The City is embarking on a comprehensive "overhaul" of the Zoning Ordinance which would result in a modern, intuitive, effective document.  The Ordinance includes regulations for setbacks, height, landscaping, signage, parking, hazardous materials storage, form based codes, Transition Overlay Districts, and historical resources.  Newark's existing Zoning Ordinace was originally adopted in 1965 and has been amended numerous times over the years.  Until now it has not received a comprehensive review and update.

Next Steps

If the Planning Commission finds the Zoning Ordinance consistent with the General Plan, then City Council will consider adoption of the Zoning Code on January 11 & 25, 2018.
