Vice Mayor Alberto T. Huezo

Councilmember HuezoAlberto Huezo was born in 1944 in El Salvador, Central America and immigrated to the United States on February 29, 1960. He considers this date his second birthday. He attended Balboa High School in San Francisco, San Francisco City College, and the University of San Francisco, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and completed significant graduate studies.

Alberto is proud of his service in the US Army between 1966 and 1968 including a tour in Southeast Asia.

Alberto and his wife Maria raised their children in Newark, Alex and Cristina, whom both graduated from UCLA and have pursued advanced degrees.

Alberto began his career in Newark in 1974 when he was appointed City Clerk and Finance Officer. Later he was promoted to Administrative Services Director, Assistant City Manager and in July 1996 he became City Manager until his retirement in 2005.

He wanted to continue serving the Newark community and so in April 2007 he was appointed as an Interim Council Member to complete the term of Susan Johnson and in November 2007 he was elected to the Newark City Council.

Alberto and his wife have a long history of involvement and passion for public service. He has served in numerous volunteer capacities and most recently in the Newark Education Foundation: he has tutored students at Newark Memorial High School; he is a member of the Newark Optimist Club and Newark Rotary Club where he has served as President and Area Assistant Governor.

Alberto and his wife are multilingual and enjoy traveling, exploring other cultures and visiting all corners of the world.
